Dr. Zainab Bagudu shortlisted as President-elect UICC

It is with great humility, I share with you the announcement of my name as of the candidates shortlisted for the President-elect position (2022-2024) of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC)- the worldwide umbrella body for cancer organizations. My nomination and the ensuing excitement fills me with a strong sense of pride, strength and confidence. I would like to thank the Nigerian Cancer Society and African Organization for Research and Training in Oncology (AORTIC) for the trust and confidence bestowed on me.

As many of you are aware, I have dedicated the last 17years of my life to our Medicaid Cancer Foundation, working to improve the quality of life of cancer patients in Nigeria and beyond. I have first-hand experience of the pain lack of access to Cancer care brings. My aspiration to lead the UICC will propel these stories to the global stage, bridge gaps, inequities and produce better inclusion for all. I possess the qualification, political strengths and professional networks that can empower all UICC member organizations in their constituents, cutting across all the regions of the world, gender, age and economies.

Sadly, the African continent has a rapidly growing cancer burden with staggeringly poor outcomes. I look forward to working with you to end these disparities and inequalities, that have become even more glaring since the covid pandemic and more recently the Russia/Ukraine crisis. Both of these catastrophic events have had significant effects on the world economy and health security.

The UICC general assembly and voting is scheduled to hold virtually on the 11th of October 2022. Over 500 member organizations will make the decision. I seek your support on this journey. Please follow and amplify our campaign on media platforms, mention at relevant fora and advocate in all your circles.

Together, we can we can save more lives!
