School-Based Vaccination Program

It is caused by the Human Papiloma Virus(HPV)

HPV vaccine is known to prevent girls from contracting cervical cancer. The vaccine is not easily affordable. Thus Medicaid Cancer Foundation started a program inviting corporate sponsors to fund the vaccination for young girls. One such partner is Jaiz Charity Foundation which undertook to vaccinate 100 girls in Government Girls Science Secondary School Yauri, Kebbi State from age 9-14.

Recognizing that education, information, awareness, advocacy and carrying the community along are all important ingredients in achieving success in such an initiative, we interacted extensively and successfully with traditional rulers, parents, teachers and girls- educating and sensitizing them on various types of cancer, risk factors, their signs and symptoms with particular emphasis on cervical cancer and the significance of the HPV vaccines.
We thank HRH Emir of Yauri Dr Mohammed Zayyanu Abdullahi, Officials of the ministries of Education and Health, community leaders, parents and teachers of Government Girls Science Secondary School Yauri for their warm reception, consent, cooperation and support for the successful completion of the outreach.
Medicaid Cancer Foundation will continue to foster partnerships that will improve cancer control in Nigeria. African solutions have to come from Africa.
