In her presentation titled “Cancer: The Kebbi Experience” Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu gave a statistical summary of the work Medicaid Cancer Foundation has carried out in terms of creating awareness on various cancers and their risks; providing free breast, cervical and prostate cancer screenings; training of healthcare workers – capacity building; providing treatment support to indigent patients. She emphasized the problem of human resource for health is one that Africa needs to tackle.
The conference provided a good platform to reiterate the MCF mantra-“Early diagnosis is key to cancer care and treatment”. To do this effectively, Medicaid diagnostic center needs the skills of pathologists. Thus, availability and accuracy of cytological diagnosis has to improve in a commensurate way to enhance the quality of cancer care.
The current president of WADIAP and Chief Histopathologist Ahmadu Bello University Col (Dr) Yawale Iliyasu later led a meeting during which both sides made a plan with clear timelines on how to train more pathologists so as to reduce wrong diagnosis and medical tourism.
