Polo is a very prestigious sport in Northern Nigeria dating back 114 years. Incidentally though, Lagos was the birthplace of polo in in 1904. One of the greatest heros of the game is the former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Shehu Kangiwa who died from injuries sustained while playing Polo on the 17th of November, 1981 in Kaduna. To honour this great son of Kebbi, NSK farms will be hosting a special tournament scheduled to take place from 14th-16th of April 2017 @NSK Polo Ranch and Resort, Argungu.
As part of its commitment to bring to the fore a strong awareness of cancer in Nigeria, Medicaid Cancer Foundation will be sponsoring a team at the tournament as well as promote the importance of sports and healthy lifestyle. The tournament will serve as an avenue of enlightening the public on the importance of physical exercise and sports in mitigating the risks of cancer.
During the 3-day tournament, 10 Polo teams are billed compete for four different cups namely
1-Shehu Kangiwa Memorial Cup : Veterans
2-Umar Shinkafi Memorial Cup: Governor Cup
3-Emir of Argungu Cup
4-Muhammadu Mera Memorial Cup
Amongst the teams playing is the Zamfara whirlwinds sponsored by #MCF. Other side events include durbar, traditional music & dance, Kabanchi display, and visit to the palace of the Emir of Argungu and Kanta museum
